A morning spent meandering through Cezanne's Aix-en-Provence,
painting with J’Anna at some of the vantage points that Cezanne used

The two top paintings are acrylics on canvas and examples of what we will be doing for this workshop. The two below are examples using acrylics like watercolors on watercolor paper. Working wet into wet looks like watercolor but behaves a little differently.  It is exciting, easy to do and the effects are very gratifying.
Because method is my mode of teaching rather than subject, you will learn how to get vibrancy as well as soft atmospheres. You will also learn how to transform a subject from ordinary to extraordinary by using just the right color note or incorporating interesting lines and forms. Visualizing and interpreting painting subjects is essential when producing a work of art.  Exercising new ways of looking at our painting habits can transform the way we approach it.  Rather than “paint ourselves into a corner” it just may be time to attempt something new.

To help us to loosen up,  we will begin doing a series of small watercolors like the two above.  Working quickly using different painting techniques participants will be able to create works of art that bring a painting to a satisfactory completion. Very wet paper, damp paper, dry paper, loaded brush, dry brush or somewhere in the middle gives very different effects. Each one has its place and this workshop will describe how, why and when to use all of them.
Knowing what to do, using so many different aspects of painting in watercolor will be covered in the time we have together.  The exercises presented here are exercises and samples only. Subject matter will be supplied but your own is welcomed and encouraged. If time allows “Geraniums” will be our final painting.

This workshop will be as much about what you don’t paint than what you do paint.  Watercolors sparkle when lots of white paper is left to describe light.  As a method teacher rather than a subject teacher, you will learn that as you continue to add water and pigment to the surface of your work, paintings actually develop their own personality.  Maintaining your whites, creating negative shapes, applying soft and hard edges all give impact and interest and are just a few of the subjects covered.
Most of the morning is spent on exercises working out details of different segments of the painting we will be doing.  This method of teaching has proven to be invaluable as a type of “practice shot before hitting the ball” (metaphorically speaking).
Throughout the workshop every aspect of our painting from composition to color mixing to knowing when to stop will be addressed and demonstrated. The paintings shown are a few examples
